Hoppers in London: choose a branch and plan a Sri Lankan meal

Hoppers offers food inspired by Sri Lanka and South India, with current London locations in Soho, Marylebone, King’s Cross and Shoreditch. The useful choice is the branch and meal that fit your group, rather than treating all four dining rooms as interchangeable.

Best for: a planned shared meal. Start with: the branch’s current menu and access. Check: reservations, walk-in expectations and dietary limitations.

Understand the menu before ordering

The operator describes a menu built around hoppers, dosas, rice, roasts and kothu. Read the current branch menu and ask how dishes are intended to combine. A hopper is not simply a substitute name for any pancake, and a shared meal can benefit from choosing a balance of formats rather than ordering everything independently.

Agree the group’s appetite and budget before ordering. Ask about portions and heat if unfamiliar with the dishes. This is practical planning guidance, not a claimed personal review of the food or a ranking against every Sri Lankan restaurant in London.

Choose the branch by the actual visit

Soho can suit a central or West End day. Marylebone works with a neighbourhood visit and the Wallace Collection area. King’s Cross can fit a northern-central shopping or rail itinerary, while Shoreditch can fit an East London day.

Use the exact branch menu and address when booking. A dish or service listed at one location is not necessarily identical elsewhere. The featured photograph shows the Coal Drops Yard area near the King’s Cross option; it does not show the restaurant’s interior or current food.

For a relaxed day, combine King’s Cross with our Coal Drops Yard route rather than crossing London for a second major activity immediately after the meal.

Reservations and walk-ins are different plans

The current Hoppers FAQ says bookings are managed online and require card details to secure them. Limited walk-in tables are first-come, first-served; a busy-time wait can be substantial. A walk-in plan is therefore unsuitable when the group has an inflexible performance or train shortly afterwards.

Read the cancellation conditions shown during booking before committing. If no slot is available, an alert or virtual queue is not a confirmed reservation. Do not assume emailing a general contact creates a booking.

For a larger group, check the branch’s current maximum and group-menu arrangements. Avoid turning up with a large walk-in party on the assumption that several small tables can be combined.

Important access differences

The operator’s current FAQ states that King’s Cross and Shoreditch have step-free access throughout, while Marylebone offers limited ground-floor step-free capacity. It states that Soho is not wheelchair accessible. These distinctions can determine the branch before food or neighbourhood preferences do.

If access is essential, contact the operator about your specific requirements and the table you intend to book. A general statement does not answer every question about toilets, circulation space or a particular group size.

Dietary requirements need a careful check

The FAQ warns that cross-contamination may occur and identifies ingredients such as chilli, coconut, garlic and onion as common. Dedicated vegetable or vegan menu choices should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every allergy or restriction can be accommodated.

Raise requirements in the booking and confirm them directly. A person avoiding a particular ingredient should not rely solely on a menu description or another visitor’s social-media advice. If the kitchen cannot safely meet the requirement, choose a different meal rather than trying to persuade it to promise something it cannot deliver.

Make the meal fit the day

Leave room for a slower dinner and a short walk afterwards. For Marylebone, use the neighbourhood guide; for East London, compare Shoreditch and Hoxton.
