Afternoon tea in London: choose the experience and understand the bill
Afternoon tea is usually a booked meal, not simply a café stop for a cup of tea and a cake. Decide whether you want a formal occasion, a lighter break or a family treat before committing to a package.
Best for: a planned celebration or slower afternoon. Allow: the booked experience and travel time. Check: service charge, dietary menus, children’s pricing and cancellation terms.
What you are choosing
A classic afternoon tea generally combines sandwiches, scones, sweets and tea, but the exact offering depends on the venue and package. A savoury tea or high tea can be a different meal. Read the menu rather than assuming that every option contains the same food with a different name.
If your main interest is tea rather than a formal meal, a simpler café or tea shop may fit better. Paying for an elaborate setting makes sense only if that is part of the experience you want. Do not schedule a substantial lunch immediately beforehand unless you deliberately want two large meals.
A verified central example: Fortnum & Mason
The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon is on the fourth floor of Fortnum & Mason at 181 Piccadilly. Its current menus distinguish Classic, Savoury and High Tea, with further dietary options shown by the operator.
The provider’s July 2026 price guidance lists starting prices of £84 for Classic, £85 for Savoury and £86 for High Tea per person, excluding service charge; children’s tea is listed at £60. The same guidance estimates an experience of about one hour and 45 minutes. These are dated starting prices, not a guaranteed quote for your selected day or package.

Read the complete cost
Check whether the quoted price is per person and what drinks it includes. Champagne, upgrades, additional food and service charge can change the total. Compare the ordinary tea with a themed or special package instead of assuming the headline price applies to everything.
For a group, calculate the total before paying a deposit. Read cancellation deadlines and any terms covering late arrival or reduced numbers. Keep the confirmation so that the agreed product and timing are clear.
Book around a manageable day
A Piccadilly tea can combine with a short St James’s or Mayfair walk. Keep shopping flexible rather than squeezing a major museum visit into the same afternoon. Arriving hot, rushed and carrying several bags can take away from a deliberately slow meal.
Allow time to reach the correct floor and entrance. If access or seating arrangements matter, verify them with the venue before booking. A department store having lifts does not answer every question about the salon, toilets or a particular table.
Dietary menus and children
A listed vegetarian or other dietary menu should be checked against your own requirements. Tell the venue about allergies in advance and ask about cross-contact. Do not treat a menu title as a medical safety guarantee.
For children, check the age range, menu and expected length of the visit. A formal sitting may suit one child and be uncomfortable for another. Choose the meal for the actual group rather than a generic claim that afternoon tea is always a family attraction.
A useful decision rule
Choose a formal tea when the meal and setting are the main event. Choose a lighter café break when you mainly need rest between activities. Neither choice needs to be dressed up as the “best afternoon tea in London” without a tested comparison.
Combine the visit with our Mayfair and Bond Street route or department-store comparison, keeping enough time for the reservation.
