West End shopping: Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby
A useful West End shopping day starts with a choice: broad high-street browsing, a department-store visit or a smaller collection of fashion and design shops. Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby connect easily, but treating every shop as a stop makes the route tiring long before it becomes useful.
Begin at Bond Street for Selfridges and the western Oxford Street shops, or Oxford Circus for Regent Street and Carnaby. Finish at Piccadilly Circus or continue into Soho for dinner. LondonFound suggests three main shopping stops, with a break between them.
Choose an Oxford Street anchor
Selfridges at 400 Oxford Street suits a multi-department visit where fashion, beauty and gifts need to be compared in one building. John Lewis & Partners, M&S, Uniqlo and the two Primark locations appear in the district’s current directory. Select the branches that match your plan instead of assuming all the names are clustered beside the same station.
For a gift-shopping afternoon, start with the recipient rather than the street: clothing needs sizes, beauty may need a known fragrance, and homeware needs room in your luggage. A small shortlist makes a large department store manageable. Keep receipts and check the individual shop’s returns conditions before paying.
Turn south onto Regent Street
From Oxford Circus, Regent Street offers another concentration of flagships rather than an extension of every Oxford Street brand. Its official directory currently lists Apple at 235 Regent Street, Arket at 224 and Burberry at 121. These addresses also show why it helps to walk in one direction: visiting all three involves more than staying at the Oxford Circus junction.
Look up from the shopfronts along the curved section as you approach Piccadilly. If architecture interests you more than another fitting room, make that the end of the walk. If shopping is the point, choose whether to continue south or turn into the smaller streets around Carnaby; trying to do both in detail may need a longer afternoon.
Liberty and the Carnaby detour
Liberty is on Great Marlborough Street, close to Oxford Circus, not a store inside the Oxford Street frontage. It is a useful option for fabric, fashion, beauty and design browsing. The store’s published directions identify a step-free entrance on Great Marlborough Street; check its full access guidance for the departments you want to reach.
Browsing the store and taking a guided Liberty tour are separate experiences. Tours require their own booking and availability, so do not build a spontaneous shopping route around the assumption that a tour will be running. Carnaby Street and Kingly Court make a compact continuation for smaller-store browsing and a meal.
Two ways to use this route
- Shopping first: Bond Street → Selfridges → selected Oxford Street shops → Oxford Circus → Liberty → Carnaby. Finish in Soho. Keep Regent Street’s southern section for another visit if fitting rooms take time.
- Shopping and architecture: Oxford Circus → Regent Street → Piccadilly Circus, then a meal nearby. Add one department store beforehand rather than attempting a complete West End retail circuit.
In rain, spend more of the time inside a department store and shorten the street section. With a mixed-interest group, agree a meeting place and time: the person buying clothes and the person interested in architecture need not spend every minute together.
Food, bags and the next stop
Leave time for a meal rather than adding it after shops close. Soho and Chinatown provide a natural finish east of Regent Street. Covent Garden and Seven Dials are a different shopping district; give them their own visit if independent browsing matters. For a more selective design-and-fashion trip, try Coal Drops Yard.
