Carnaby shopping: main street, Newburgh Street and Soho extensions
SHOPPING · SOHO
Carnaby is a compact shopping district rather than a single parade. The useful distinction is between the main pedestrian street, the smaller Newburgh Street cluster and the adjoining Soho shops. Explore those differences and you get more from the visit than a photograph beneath the street sign.
Checked 6 October 2026. This route is for fashion, trainers and smaller purchases; for food, theatres and the wider neighbourhood, use the separate Soho guide.
Three different shopping moods
Start with Carnaby Street for recognisable brands and flagship browsing. Move onto Newburgh Street when you want a narrower street and a more selective shop-to-shop visit. Finish through the adjoining Soho lanes if records or broader streetwear matter more than covering another clothing chain.
The estate’s current Soho directory includes adidas Originals, END., GANNI, RIXO and Annie’s Ibiza, alongside Liberty and record shops such as Third Man Records, Sister Ray and Reckless Records. These are useful starting points for different interests; they are not interchangeable shopping experiences. Select two or three that fit what you actually want to buy.
Carnaby Street: use the main spine as orientation
Begin from the Oxford Circus side if you are combining this with Oxford Street, or from the Piccadilly side if you are coming from a theatre or Regent Street. Use the main street to orient yourself before turning into the surrounding lanes. The compact area makes it easy to backtrack, but the shop you noticed on a side street may be less easy to find after a long detour.
For trainers, decide whether you are looking for everyday footwear, a specific release or a particular size. A streetwear shop’s presence in the directory does not guarantee limited-edition stock. Check the relevant retailer directly before making a long trip for one item. For clothes, try the garment rather than assuming that two brands use equivalent sizing.
Newburgh Street: a separate, worthwhile turn
Fred Perry’s own shop finder confirms its store at 12 Newburgh Street, W1F 7RP, off Carnaby Street. That gives you a specific anchor for the smaller-street part of the visit. Its polo-shirt and casualwear focus is a different proposition from a broad department store.
Newburgh Street is also a good place to slow the pace. Look at the individual window and the shop’s own range before deciding whether it deserves your time. A smaller frontage can contain a focused collection, while a dramatic display may be more about a seasonal concept. Neither is a reason to assume every garment is independent, locally made or sustainably produced; those claims need product-level evidence.
Liberty or record shops?
Use Liberty when you want a department-store extension with accessories, beauty or homeware in the mix. Use the Soho record-shop listings when your priority is music. Those choices lead to different amounts of browsing and bag space; a vinyl search is easier with time to inspect condition than as a rushed last stop.
If buying a gift, check dimensions, fragility and the recipient’s preferences before choosing. Keep a note of the shop and ask about the applicable return arrangements at purchase. A gift that looks transportable on a shelf may need a box that is awkward in hand luggage. This route is deliberately about practical shopping choices, rather than a list of supposedly essential souvenirs.
A manageable two-hour visit
- Walk the Carnaby Street spine and identify your main shop.
- Make the Newburgh Street turn before continuing deeper into Soho.
- Choose one extension: Liberty for department-store browsing, or the record-shop streets for a music-focused search.
- Pause before adding another district. If you already have your intended purchase, a meal or neighbourhood walk may be more rewarding than another full shopping circuit.
Two hours is an editorial planning allowance, not a measured completion time. Fittings, queues, appointments and a meal can turn it into a longer visit. Check individual opening times if you have a tight schedule, particularly on Sundays or before an evening performance.
Comfort and access
The streets are outdoors and some adjoining lanes have uneven surfaces. Pedestrian areas do not guarantee step-free shop entrances, accessible toilets or an uninterrupted quiet route. Contact the shop you need about the exact entrance and sales floor. If you are bringing children, agree where to meet before adults split between shops; this is a busy central district with many possible exits.
The featured photograph records Carnaby at an earlier date. Decorations and retailer signs may have changed; it illustrates the place rather than promising a current seasonal installation.
Build a different West End afternoon
Continue with the Soho and Chinatown neighbourhood guide for a food-led route. Choose the West End shopping comparison if you are deciding between Carnaby, Regent Street and department stores, or Covent Garden for a different district. This article does not duplicate those wider itineraries.
