Horniman with children: music, world cultures and gardens
FAMILY LONDON · FOREST HILL
The Horniman offers a different family museum day: musical instruments, objects from many cultures and gardens on a hillside, with paid animal attractions available as separate choices. In October 2026, the important planning fact is that the Natural History Gallery is closed.
Checked 6 October 2026. Do not travel expecting the usual natural-history displays to be open.
What is free, and what needs a ticket?
The Horniman visitor information confirms free entry to the museum and gardens. The Aquarium, Butterfly House, temporary exhibition and some events carry separate charges. Book the attraction your family actually wants; adding every paid component can turn a relaxed museum day into a timetable.
The museum’s Nature + Love project has closed the Natural History Gallery until early 2027. Some garden areas and routes may also change during the works. Do not build the visit around old photographs of the walrus or promise a reopening date more precise than the museum has announced.
Make the Music Gallery the centre of the day
The Music Gallery combines instrument displays with listening opportunities. The keyboard section, At Home With Music, gives a useful starting point: compare how instruments are shaped, then think about how a player creates the sound. Children do not need to know musical terminology to notice strings, keys or a resonating body.
The hands-on space has a different timetable from the gallery: during term-time weekdays it opens in the afternoon, while weekends and school holidays have a wider daytime window. It can also close for workshops. Check the current page if playing instruments is the reason for your visit; being inside the gallery does not guarantee that every activity is available.
A simple family prompt is to choose one unfamiliar instrument, listen where the display allows, then find another that makes sound differently. It creates a small shared task without asking children to follow every case.
World Gallery: objects and the people behind them
The free World Gallery draws on anthropology collections and includes tactile and sensory elements. Its Perspectives area asks how objects are classified. Start with a familiar everyday object and ask what a visitor might misunderstand if they saw it without its owner or context.
The Benin display is particularly important for older children and adults. The museum explains that it transferred ownership of 72 objects to Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments in 2022; six were physically returned and others remain on loan. Read the current labels rather than treating the cases as an uncomplicated collection of beautiful things.
Gardens after the indoor galleries
The gardens are a good change of pace, but the hillside is part of the experience. The visitor information warns that some paved paths are steep and that the Nature Trail can be uneven and muddy. For a buggy, wheelchair or anyone unsteady on their feet, choose the suitable route shown onsite rather than assuming every outdoor path is accessible.
On a wet day, use a shorter garden circuit and give the indoor galleries more time. Do not make the paid Butterfly House an automatic rainy-day substitute: confirm its own admission arrangements and the experience your family expects.
A practical half-day shape
- Arrive with any paid-attraction time already decided.
- Use the Music Gallery as one focused indoor activity.
- Explore a selected part of the World Gallery, with time for questions.
- Take a food break, then choose a suitable garden route if conditions allow.
Keep the optional attractions optional. An aquarium-focused child may need a different order from a music-focused family. Check the ticket page for the current products and concessions rather than relying on an old combined-ticket description.
Getting there and choosing an alternative
The Horniman is at 100 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3PQ. Its visitor page describes a five-to-ten-minute walk from Forest Hill station. Allow more time if the approach or hillside requires a slower pace, and check current services before travelling.
If your child’s main interest is natural history, choose the Natural History Museum family guide instead while the Horniman gallery is closed. For hands-on science, see the Science Museum guide. Those are distinct museum days, not additional stops to squeeze into this one.
