London airport transfer guide: choose the right arrival route
PLAN YOUR VISIT · AIRPORT ARRIVALS
Compare a London airport journey by its final destination, not just the time advertised to a railway terminus. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City and Southend have different connections and payment rules. Start with your flight terminal, accommodation address and the time you expect to leave arrivals.
Heathrow: compare three railway choices
The Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line and Heathrow Express serve different London journeys. Heathrow Express terminates at Paddington; the other two options continue through London on their own routes. Choose the connection that suits your actual hotel and check your airport terminal, especially for the return journey.
A faster first leg can become a less comfortable journey if it adds an awkward interchange with luggage. Read our Heathrow to London guide for the decision sequence, accessibility and private-transfer checklist.
Gatwick: Victoria or another central station?
Gatwick’s railway station is at the South Terminal, with a free shuttle from the North Terminal. Gatwick Express and Southern provide Victoria options; Thameslink connects with several other London stations. Look at the actual stopping pattern rather than treating all services as equivalent.
A hotel near London Bridge, Blackfriars or Farringdon may call for a different choice from one near Victoria. Our Gatwick arrival guide covers terminal movement, ticket comparisons and the final connection.
Stansted: keep Oyster and contactless separate
Stansted Express connects with Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale. Its current published guidance permits pay-as-you-go contactless bank cards and supported devices at Stansted Airport, while Oyster is not valid there. Do not repeat an older guide’s assumption that those payment methods have identical airport coverage.
Compare a purchased ticket with contactless, especially for groups, children or railcards. Rail replacement arrangements also need their own check. Read the Stansted to London guide before selecting the London connection or coach alternative.
Luton: include the terminal connection
The railway station is Luton Airport Parkway, not the terminal. The DART links the station and airport. When comparing a railway itinerary, establish whether the ticket covers that connection rather than assuming every ticket with Luton in its name does.
Account for terminal movement and the complete London route. Our Luton Airport guide explains the DART distinction, ticket checks and arrival planning. A rail service into London does not mean every advertised destination has a direct train from the airport station.
London City: follow the DLR connection to your destination
London City Airport has a DLR station. Choose the interchange and station exit for your actual address, rather than assuming the airport’s London location puts every hotel close by. Canary Wharf itself contains several stations and a large area of streets and developments.
The London City Airport guide covers DLR payment, access and the final stop. Check the route for the time you expect to leave the airport, including any planned disruption.
Southend: check the railway and the last connection
Southend Airport station provides Greater Anglia connections towards Stratford and Liverpool Street. Use the airport’s current train information for the service on your date. Southend Airport is different from stations serving Southend town.
For an early departure or late arrival, check the full itinerary rather than assuming there is an overnight train. A connection into Liverpool Street still leaves the journey to your accommodation. We do not yet have a separate researched Southend transfer guide.
Compare train, coach and private car fairly
Train travel can offer a predictable main journey, but stations, luggage and the final walk matter. A coach can suit a London stop near your destination or provide a fallback during rail works. Compare its actual terminal, luggage rules and return conditions. Road traffic makes a scheduled arrival time a planning estimate.
A private car may reduce changes for a group, substantial luggage or an awkward final address. Compare the complete quote with the cost for all travellers on public transport. Confirm waiting, delayed-flight arrangements, child seats, mobility equipment and cancellation with the provider; a generic vehicle description is not enough.
Before you pay
- Use the flight terminal and hotel’s complete address.
- Allow for arrivals procedures before selecting a departure.
- Check ticket validity, payment and discounts for every traveller.
- Check station access and the last local connection.
- Plan departure-day luggage and the airline’s airport arrival requirements.
