Heathrow to London: choosing the right airport transfer
London Guides · Airport travel
The best route from Heathrow is the one that gets you to your actual destination with the least friction. A fast train to Paddington can be useful for a hotel nearby; a direct journey to another central station may save a change. Compare the whole journey, including the final walk, rather than the headline airport-to-city time.

Choose by destination, luggage and arrival time
Elizabeth line: a useful starting point when your accommodation is near its central London stations, including Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon or Liverpool Street. It serves Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Check the destination shown on the train when returning to the airport: not every service goes to every terminal.
Piccadilly line: consider it for a direct Underground journey to destinations along that line. It serves all Heathrow terminals. Compare your hotel’s nearest station with the Elizabeth line route before deciding; an extra interchange with luggage can outweigh a faster first leg.
Heathrow Express: connects the airport with Paddington. The advertised journey from Terminals 2 & 3 to Paddington is 15 minutes, but that excludes reaching the platform and continuing to your hotel. It can make sense when Paddington is convenient. Compare the current fare and any advance-purchase conditions with other options.
A pre-booked car: can simplify a journey with substantial luggage, several travellers or a destination awkward to reach by rail. Road traffic makes journey times variable. Ask the operator to confirm the meeting point, waiting arrangements, luggage capacity and total quote before booking.
A practical decision sequence
First, identify your arrival terminal and your accommodation’s full address. Next, enter the route into the TfL Journey Planner for the expected time you will leave the terminal, allowing time for border control and baggage. Finally, compare the number of changes, walking and step-free requirements. An easy route is often more valuable after a long flight than a marginal saving in train time.
Do not assume daytime services will suit a late arrival. Check first and last trains for your date, and allow for a delayed flight. If travelling as a family or group, calculate the total cost for everyone and check each operator’s child-ticket rules rather than comparing one adult fare with a car quote.
Tickets, payment and accessibility
The Elizabeth line accepts Oyster and contactless payment, with Heathrow-specific fares. Do not assume a central London fare covers the airport journey. Check the current fare with TfL. If using an overseas bank card, check acceptance and any foreign transaction charges with your card provider, and keep an alternative payment method available.
If stairs or long walks would be difficult, use the journey planner’s accessibility options and check the full route, including your destination station. A step-free airport station does not establish that every interchange and the final exit are suitable. Travellers needing assistance should consult the operator’s arrangements before departure.
Before you book a private transfer
Have your flight number, date, terminal, passenger count, destination and luggage details ready. Confirm arrangements for a flight delay and any waiting or cancellation charges. Families should ask about the appropriate child seats; travellers with mobility equipment should discuss the vehicle and assistance they need. These details should be agreed with the provider, not assumed from a generic booking page.
